The Yellow Wallpaper Reflection vs. Jane Eyre
I think the main similarity between The Yellow Wallpaper and Jane Eyre is the characters. In The Yellow Wallpaper, John is taking care of the narrarator who is sick. I think this represents Mr. Rochester and his wife, Bertha in Jane Eyre. Also, John and the narrarator are married, and so are Mr. Rochester and Bertha. As you can tell from the story, the narrarator seems crazy. She sits in a room and stares at the wall paper, trying to find a pattern. Bertha is also considered "mad" in Jane Eyre. Overall, Mr. Rochester and John, and the narrarator and Bertha are similar. That is my opinon on how The Yellow Wallpaper is related to Jane Eyre.

I agree with you too jake, that was the first connection i made between the two stories. The slight difference is between the two is that Bertha is more a minor character in the story Jane Eyre and the narrator in The Yellow Wallpaper is the main character but besides that they have some same qualities.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that there are many similarities between the two stories. I thought it was neat how The Yellow Wallpaper kept making John Mitchell think of a fire and how the story had a strong similarity to Bertha (including killing herself) -- which all relate to the end of Jane Eyre. The narrator in Yellow Wallpaper also mentions her disgust for Jane once and in the book, Jane was lucky to leave or Bertha probably would've killed her. All the similarities are really neat, and I wonder if the author of The Yellow Wallpaper meant for it to be like that.
ReplyDeleteGood analysis of the story! I was thinking the exact same things as I was reading this story. The Yellow Wallpaper is creepy and mysterious, and I think the simmilarities between The Yellow Wallpaper and Jane Eyre are too obvious to ignore. As for the author of the story meaning to put these things in there Steven, I'd be really surprised if it was unintentional, unless the plot of Jane Eyre was hiding out in her subconcsious.
